Fred Thompson Statement on the National Intelligence Estimate

McLean, VA - Fred Thompson released the following statement today on the latest National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) regarding Iran:
"The accuracy of the latest NIE on Iran should be received with a good deal of skepticism. Our intelligence community has often underestimated the intentions of adversaries, including Saddam Hussein's Iraq and North Korea. And are all of the CIA detractors now going to take intelligence pronouncements at face value? It's awfully convenient for a lot of people: the administration gets to say its policies worked; the Democrats get to claim we should have eased up on Iran a long time ago: and Russia and China can claim sanctions on Iran are not necessary. Who benefits from all this? Iran.

"And what if the NIE estimate is accurate? It's essentially an analysis of Iran's intentions at a point in time. Meanwhile, Iran continues to enrich uranium for allegedly peaceful purposes, but which wou ld allow them to easily transition to a nuclear weapons program at any point in the future. Maybe even now--now that so many seem willing to forget Iran's past deceptions and ongoing intransigence. After all, a nuclear weapons program is simply an extension of the process by why uranium is enriched for civilian nuclear fuel. To this day Iran has yet to comply with international demands and its Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty requirements for open inspections and other safeguard measures.
"The bottom line is that the United States must continue to improve its human intelligence capabilities and intelligence analysis. We must hope for the best, but not let our guard down for a moment. If something appears to be too good to be true, it very well may be."

BIDEN CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCES LOCAL ENDORSEMENTS IN IOWA
Announces New Local Support Following Four-Day Trip to the State
Des Moines, IA (December 5, 2007) – The Biden for President Campaign today announced the addition of over fifty new prominent local leaders in Iowa to its statewide steering committee. These local elected officials, Democratic Party activists and community leaders from across the Hawkeye State will be instrumental in helping the campaign organize throughout Iowa in the final weeks leading up to the January 3rd caucuses.

“We are honored that these Iowans pledged to support Sen. Biden. This group of community leaders reveals the grassroots energy behind Sen. Biden that’s spreading across Iowa. AS CAMPAIGN MOMENTUM GROWS, JOHN EDWARDS FOR PRESIDENT UNVEILS NEW TELEVISION AD IN NEW HAMPSHIRE ENTITLED ‘RIGGED’

Second ad released during “Building a Better America Week”

Manchester, New Hampshire – Today, on day three of “Building a Better America Week,” the John Edwards for President campaign unveiled its second New Hampshire television ad of the week, entitled “Rigged.” The ad features John Edwards speaking directly to New Hampshire voters about how the system in Washington is corrupt and rigged against hardworking Americans on behalf of the moneyed corporate interests.

“John Edwards has spent his entire life fighting for hardworking Americans against big corporate interests,” said New Hampshire state director Beth Leonard. “He knows that replacing a group of corporate Republicans with a group of corporate Democrats is not going to bring about the bold change we so desperately need.”

"Rigged" is the fifth ad to air in New Hampshire since the summer. "Rigged" and "Together" will both air on broadcast and cable across the state.

Edwards will return to New Hampshire this Friday and Saturday: www.johnedwards.com/nh/events

The ad can be viewed at: http://johnedwards.com/watch/rigged/

High quality files can be downloaded here:

Below is a full transcript of the ad:

"RIGGED:” 30

This system is corrupt. And it's rigged. And it's rigged against you.

ANN: Finally, someone telling the truth.
And we can say as long as we get Democrats in, everything's gonna be ok. It's a lie. It is not the truth.

Do you really believe if we replace a crowd of corporate Republicans with a crowd of corporate Democrats that anything meaningful's gonna change?
This has to stop. It's that simple.

I’m John Edwards, and I approved this message.
